The Bible Hill Junior High School in Truro was the setting for the 11th. annual reunion of the British Home Children and Descendants Association. There were 41 in attendance to enjoy a video of Cecil and Marilyn Verge's presentation which had been shown on Eastlink TV and to hear Terry Punch, noted genealogist and historian speak on the subject of the many different groups of people who emigrated to Nova Scotia from the British Isles. After concluding the program at the school gymnasium, approximately 30 people made their way to Victoria Park to join Bill Mills, the Mayor of Truro, in dedicating a bench and Bur Oak tree to the memory of the British Home Children who were sent to Canada by Dr. John Middlemore. The Mayor was introduced by Cecil Verge, former chair of the association.

Hello again everyone,

This is to inform or remind you of the 11th. annual reunion of the British Home Children and Descendants Association.
This year's reunion will be held on Saturday, October 19th. at the Bible Hill Junior High School. The school is located at 741 College Road, Bible Hill, Truro, Nova Scotia.
Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. and there is no registration fee. We would prefer to have you pre-register by mail, telephone or e-mail to speed up the process. This will also help us with an estimate of the number of lunches to prepare (lunch is free). Your name tag, door prize ticket and information will be ready at the door.
We are honoured to have Mr. Terry Punch, renowned historian and genealogist, as our guest speaker.
We are planning to leave the school earlier than usual and travel to Victoria Park for a dedication of the bench and tree that were placed there in memory of our BHC. Amap of the route will be provided for those of you who are unfamiliar with Truro.

(A dedication of the bench and tree at Rockingham Community Park is tentatively planned for Saturday, September 28th, British Home Child Day.)

Our association would like to have a second Home Child quilt made in memory of BHC who were sent to Canada via the Middlemore Home. We have expressions of interest from some members but need more. It doesn't matter what province your BHC was placed in as long as they were Middlemore children.

If you have a photo and / or information of your BHC that you would like to have added to our Power Point presentation, please send it to me.

For anyone on Facebook, we have a group page  - British Home Children and Descendants Association (Nova Scotia). Once joining the group you can post requests and / or information, etc. We periodically post photos and useful information about upcoming BHC events.

7th Annual British Home Children & Descendants
Association Reunion Report

Over 130 people gathered at the Royal Bank Theatre, Cape Breton University October 17, 2009. It was not only to celebrate the 7th Annual British Home Children & Descendants Association Reunion, but also celebrate the 140th Anniversary of the British Home Children Movement.
The morning session was partnered with the Beaton Institute, Cape Breton University. This session was highlighted by Steve Schwinghamer and Jim St. Clair. Steve is a research coordinator at Pier 21 for the past number of years.  Steve spoke of “The Immigrant Experience’. Jim, a genealogist and freelance broadcaster is best known as the Cape Breton Historian. Jim spoke on “Home Children in Cape Breton Island”. The analogy Jim made between the Orangedale Train Station and the song the “Orangedale Whistle” was one that will be remembered, every time those in attendance hear the song. Both topics were well received and followed up with a question and answer period. Author, Beryl Young of Vancouver, British Columbia spoke about her newly launched book “Charlie: A Home Child’s Life in Canada.” It is a touching book about Beryl’s father arriving in Canada in 1911 and her not finding out this until the late 1950’s.  Barry Shears, spoke of research he is compiling about British Home Children and their descendants who have contributed to the strong Celtic culture on Cape Breton Island.
After a lunch break attendees returned for the cutting of the Reunion cake.  Three generations of descendants of BHC John W Ellis accompanied Cecil & Marilyn Verge as they had the honour of the cutting of the cake.
The afternoon session opened with the singing of the 1900’s version of O Canada. Catherine West, Chair of the British Home Children and Descendants Association welcomed those in attendance. She opened by thanking all those involved in the morning session along with the Reunion Planning committee. Three congratulatory letters sent to the reunion committee were read also.
Between 2 pm and 2:45 pm attendees were offered the option of remaining for the Annual General meeting or visiting the Beaton Institute as it was open for research, viewing Historica Projects, or just mingle.  The Historica Projects on display were done by grandchildren of British Home Children.
Immediately preceding the popular Pass the Microphone, a touching British Home Children Slide Show was shown.  The purpose of the slide show was to remember the children, to reflect on their struggles, their triumphs, and their contribution to Canada.   The Pass the Microphone session was a chance for those who wished to tell their Home Child story, as usual this was very popular.
Catherine West provided the closing remarks, by thanking those in attendance and inviting them to the 8th Annual reunion to be held October 16, 2010 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The reunion officially concluded with the singing of “God Save The Queen”.
To close this report I hope no one will mind if I repeat Catherine’s most touching words in her closing “Special thanks to all of our British Home Children for their legacy of courage, bravery and industriousness.”

Let us be proud of who we are ......their descendants!

Some comments from people in attendance:
....We had a wonderful day and it just flew by!!!

....a fine gathering - most interesting and quite moving....

....I was moved by all the stories and wept along with everyone else. You could sense the love the people had for their brave ancestors....

....Nice to see all the people and to put a face to some of the names....
